Tree knows US top brass won't care about justice in this instance, and asks Billy if he'll look into it.

But Billy can't use any of his leave to investigate, because British intelligence agent Major Cosgrove puts him on a bizarre and delicate case. A British accountant has been murdered in an English village, and he may or may not have had some connection with the US Army—Billy doesn't know, because Cosgrove won't tell him. Billy is supposed to go into the village and investigate the murder, but everything seems fishy—he's not allowed to interrogate certain key witnesses, and his friends and helpers keep being whisked away. Billy is confused about whether Cosgrove even wants him to solve the murder, and why.

The good news is the mysterious murder gives Billy an excuse to spend time in and around the village where Tree and his unit are stationed. If he's lucky, maybe he can get to the bottom of both mysteries—and save more than one innocent life.

Starred Review. Pervasive racism in the U.S. Army during WWII frames Benn's excellent eighth Billy Boyle whodunit (after 2012's Death's Door). In March 1944, Billy receives an appeal from an old estranged friend, Sgt. Eugene Tree Jackson. A member of Tree's colored battalion has been arrested for the murder of Thomas Eastman, an English policeman, who was found with his head bashed in on his father's grave in the village of Chilton Foliat. Tree is positive that the accused was mistakenly arrested. Boyle wants to help, but he's pulled away into another homicide investigation west of London in which MI5 has an interest. The intelligence service's role may be related to the fact that the victim's landlords were two Germans who fled their native country because they opposed the Nazis. The superior plot and thoughtful presentation of institutional racism directed against American soldiers about to risk their lives for their country make this one of Benn's best. (Sept.)

Meanwhile, Billy has reconnected with an old friend from Boston, a black man called Tree, a sergeant in a tank destroyer unit. There is bad blood between Billy and Tree, but Tree puts that aside to ask for Billy’s help in freeing a friend from his unit, wrongly accused of killing an Englishman. Juggling both cases, Billy finds himself in the middle of a simmering racial conflict between the black soldiers stationed in the area and their white counterparts, who resent the fact that the blacks have been warmly received by the English. The mysteries themselves are pretty standard fare, but Benn’s thoroughly researched exploration of segregation in the wartime armed services is revealing and sensitively handled. Another nice mix of human drama and WWII history. --Bill Ott

Excellent book in the series...

I am writing this review of "A Blind Goddess", comparing it with James Benn's previous work and with other historical novels set in WW2.

Author James Benn is a good - not great - writer but he seems to have found his niche in his Billy Boyle series, set in WW2. His main character - reluctant soldier Billy Boyle - is a Boston cop from a long familial line of Boston cops. His father is his mentor in his career and it is an important relationship, particularly in "A Blind Goddess". Though Billy's father is not a character in 1944, their relationship - as well as the father/son relationship of another soldier, also from Boston and a father/son set of police officers in a village in England - is at the heart of the book.

Billy Boyle returns with his regular cast of supporting characters. His great friend - "Kaz" - is with him when he is asked by his own command to look into a murder of a man in a local village, not far from London. The area is also temporary home to US forces who are working towards the eventual invasion of France. There's plenty of on-going racial tension between the black units and the white units stationed in the village and fights and brawls are common. At some point, someone's going to get hurt. Along with Kaz, several government and military figures also pop up. The most important is Billy's cousin, a certain Allied commander named Eisenhower, who has appointed Billy as his dogsbody in looking into troublesome matters. (Also introduced in the novel is John Masterman, the real head of the "Double X System".)

Benn does an excellent job in his books at looking at the war at a micro-level. The reader knows that preparation for the Allied invasion of France is taking place, but Benn concentrates on matters in the village and some other murders and possible abductions that have come to light. The ugly racial divide between blacks and whites is a simmering pot on the stove that threatens to boil over. And it finally does. Billy's old friend from Boston - the black soldier from whom he has been estranged - "Tree" Jackson is the pivotal character in that subplot. He is the son of the father/son from Billy's youth in Boston. Billy's "love interest" - a generic enough blonde aristocrat named Diana Seaton - has also returned but aside from her investigating and trying to expose the Nazi "Final Solution", she is not an important part of the plot. I've often wondered if James Benn's publisher told him the books had to have a "love interest" so he invented Diana Seaton. She's not very interesting - though she probably could be. I don't think the books need her - but what do I know?

One of the joys about reading series books is the return to old characters we've grown to know and like in past books. It's comforting to know that Billy Boyle and Kaz and Big Mike and others will return to us yet again. (That's not a spoiler!) James Benn has returned to us in September, 2013, with an excellent book about Billy Boyle and WW2. (I'm also wondering if Benn used the name "Stuart Neville" as the name of one of the murder victims as an honor of his fellow author, Stuart Neville?)

Billy Boyle Gets Promoted!

I have enjoyed the Billy Boyle series by James R. Benn. They all take place in the European Theater during WWII. Billy is a distant relative of Mamie Doud Eisenhower and through some connections has managed to be assigned to the General's staff. Since both his dad and uncle served in WWI they are eager to keep him out of harm's way. Only it's not exactly working out that way----as Billy has put his policing and detecting skills to good use. And in this story as in all the others his life is in danger more than just a few times!

Billy has been recently promoted to Captain. He's back in England and has been contacted by an African American soldier who was one of his best friends back in Boston. Tree, or Sgt. Jackson is assigned with a black infantry division and seeks Billy's help in exonerating a buddy who has been accused of murder. It happens to be a young constable in a small village and his sister also happened to date Tree's buddy---whose nickname is Angry. This is where Benn gets into the whole racial issues in the American military. There was segregation of units and even so far to consider certain areas in the Allied countries off limits to Black soldiers. In this little village these soldiers are welcomed because to the Brits they are always polite and respectful----even more than the white American troops! And they don't seem to mind if these guys "walk out" with their sisters. So there is this issue and then another.

Billy is summoned by Major Cosgrove, his British foreign service counterpart who wants him to investigate another murder, but this time it's a civilian man who works for a building society(place where people can get mortgages). The other part of this is that he lodges with a German couple and their daughter----so are they suspects? And are they really loyal to Britain?

There is also a girl gone missing from a local boarding school. And then a girl turns up in the nearby canal. Are these incidents all related? Or is there more than one killer on the loose?

It's up to Captain Billy Boyle and his loyal sidekick Kaz to find out what's behind all of these terrible tragedies. And in his quest for the truth and asking questions of all those that may be concerned, he once again becomes prey to those that would like nothing more than to be rid of this inquisitive Yank! Once again James R. Benn has done his research which always includes information surrounding this terrible War that cost the lives of not only those that served, but also innocent civilians.

Love a Novel with an Author's Note.

This is the eighth in the Billy Boyle series, but it stands alone just fine. For those who have read them all, BLIND GODDESS follows the path of the others. To wit: Billy is no longer a bumbler, which takes some of the humor out. As Billy has improved as an investigator, Mr. Benn has improved as a writer. Like all of the novels in the series, the book is based upon real WWII events. The author's notes explains.

In this book, Billy encounters the segregation and prejudice that was so unjust to the blacks who participated in WWII. They wanted to be far more than stevedores, but were often shunted aside, even if trained for combat, so as to not offend the whites (especially southerners) in the American Armed Forces. When in England, the black Americans found civilians who, for the first time in their lives, treated them as equals.

Here Billy is assigned to solve a murder with his hands tied behind his back by MI5. Luckily, it is near where a black friend from Boston is stationed with a black unit of tank destroyers. Their gunner has been falsely accused of murder after a perfunctory investigation, so Billy gets to work two crimes.

This was another excellent book in this terrific series. My only reservation about it is that Billy is given 21st century sensibilities on race and inequalities. Maybe there were people who thought as he did then, but it is difficult to portray the proper or apt sensibilities in a character who lived before the author and most readers were born. Perhaps it was possible for an Irishman from Boston to be more open about race relations than his ancestors would be thirty years later in Southie, but I'm not sure. Regardless, the history is excellent and the two mysteries are very very good. It is always nice to get an education when reading a thoroughly entertaining novel.

And now Tom is at the festival with his new girlfriend. Ruby is a tough girl who parties hard and whose grades are so bad that she may have to repeat the school year. Very short paragraphs alternate first-person perspectives between Kaz and Ruby. The jump between characters can be a bit confusing at first, but teens will quickly acclimate. The girls drink and have sex (and face realistic consequences for both) and are ultimately there for each other. The importance of friendship is the message Kaz and Ruby learn over the weekend—and one that will resonate with teens. The girls drink and have sex (and face realistic consequences for both) and are ultimately there for each other.
