The image of drowned circus cages in the trash-filled canals of Venice, California, both haunts and illuminates famed fantasy and science fiction author Ray Bradbury's rare venture into the mystery field. Like filmmaker Federico Fellini, Bradbury is fascinated by the seedy splendor of cheap carnivals and circuses--"a long time before, in the early Twenties, these cages had probably rolled by like bright summer storms with animals prowling them, lions opening their mouths to exhale hot meat breaths. Teams of white horses had dragged their pomp through Venice and across the fields."

But now it's the early 1950s, and foggy, shabby Venice is the last stop on the circus train for scores of old silent-movie stars and young writers trying to keep their art and their bodies alive. As Bradbury's autobiographical hero, a young writer, pounds out his short stories, someone is killing off the older denizens of the tacky city. The writer joins forces with a quirky detective called Elmo Crumley and a faded screen star to investigates the deaths. Their search begins and ends in one of those iconic, waterlogged cages.

A great new twist for Bradbury

Ray Bradbury, as his fans know, is a man who has published a lot of works through the years -- over 500 -- but only a handful of novels. Most of his novels, in fact, are expanded versions of his short stories, e.g., Fahrenheit 451. Death Is A Lonely Business, a very good title from a man who is a master of titles, published in 1985, was his first novel since 1962's Something Wicked This Way Comes. What a surprise, then, it was for me to find this overlooked gem at my local library for a mere 50 cents. It is something one would not expect Bradbury to write: a detective story. Of sorts. This genre, previously monopolized in the science fiction realm by Isaac Asimov (as was everything else), turns out to fit Bradbury's writing style surprisingly well. As anyone who has read the author knows, he has a unique and very distinctive style -- poetic, atmospheric, and highly literary. Arthur C. Clarke has termed him a "prose poet", and this description works quite well. His aforementioned style, which is very complex and literary, would seem, on the surface, ill-suited to a hard-boiled detective novel and destined to be relegated to the short story -- as, indeed, much of Bradbury's work is. His writing style and use of imagery is very dense and literate, too much for some, and is often difficult to hold up over the course of a novel. This novel, like much of his work, contains very vivid poetic descriptions and not a few fantasy elements, and the reader is often left unsure whether a given sentence is meant to be taken literally or only figuratively. This was a problem for many readers with Something Wicked This Way Comes, a novel that had a very simple plot -- one might almost say, with its two child protagonists, that it was written for teenagers -- but this issue, thankfully, does not come up during the course of this interesting and very engrossing novel. Though this is, essentially, a detective story, it does not escape Bradbury's distinctive touches. His style is omnipresent throughout. It proves to be very engrossing. The first chapter -- the book's sections are not technically separated as such, but the definition will work fine -- pulls the reader in, and it is very difficult to put it down: I read the book nearly in one sitting. Bradbury pours on the suspense and the keeps the reader reading. His poetic descriptions of Venice, California's broken-down piers and carnival scenery are vivid and very atmospheric; the descriptions are beautiful prose to read, mysterious and alluring, dark and brooding. Any long-time Bradbury reader will immediately appreciate this aspect of the novel. The book is also loaded with literary references, to Brabdury's own work and to a vast number of other authors. This is a treat for the author's faithful readers and shows the author's encyclopedic knowledge of literature. In addition, the novels main character, by whom it is narrarated, is a highly autobiographical character clearly modeled on Bradbury's own early career. All of this is very good, certainly enough to recommend the novel. The only reason I have given it 4 stars is the ending, which is a very jarring anti-climax. The final revealing of the murderer is not a surprise, and the way in which he is caught is very unrealistic and hard to believe. This will probably frustrate the reader, as it did me, putting an ill-conceived end to an otherwise excellent novel. Stil, the book is well-worth reading, as Bradbury usually is, and this flaw only dims one's enjoyment of it somewhat. Highly recommended for Bradbury fans, or those who enjoy the noir mystery genre and are looking for something with more of a twist than they usually get.

"Hard boiled" mystery, with tender-hearted sleuth.

Writing in the style of hard-boiled mystery writers such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiel Hammett, Bradbury sets his story in Venice, California, in 1949, presenting as his main character a 27-year-old struggling writer, much like himself. Returning to Venice late one night on the last trolley from Los Angeles, he finds himself alone in the car, except for a mysterious, alcohol-fumed vagrant, who whispers in his ear, "Death is a lonely business." Convinced that he has met "Death's friend," the speaker gets "chicken skin," which gets worse when, upon arriving in Venice, he glances into an old canal and discovers, inside an abandoned lion cage, a body bobbing up and down on the tides.
The city of Venice in 1949 is a place for the down-and-out, its pier and amusement park crumbling, its rollercoaster lying on its side "like the bones of a vast dinosaur," old animal cages abandoned in the canals and filled with fish, and the oil pumps looking like "great pterodactyls" as they creak and groan. Inhabited by "the lonelies," old people with no futures, Venice is a dark and dismal place in those final days before the pier is demolished. Bradbury's hypnotic descriptions of this decrepitude provide dramatic contrasts with the young speaker who still has hopes, dreams, and a future.
With veteran detective Elmo Crumley as his mentor, the speaker tries to save lives and outwit a mysterious stalker, as more and more sad, old people meet their deaths. Hollywood performers, an opera singer, a lady who once raised canaries, a tarot card reader, an inept barber who knew Scott Joplin, and the owner of an old cinema all contribute to the color, atmosphere, and action in this unusual story of people and places which have outlived their usefulness.
Bradbury's writing, as always, is witty, descriptive, imaginative, and atmospheric. These separate elements do not seem to jell into a coherent whole, however. The speaker and Crumley are supposed to be "hard-boiled," but their genuine tenderness and naivete work at cross-purposes with the sometimes gruesome deaths they investigate. Unlike the classic detectives, they seem to care more about the sad, old residents than they do about catching the killer. Elements of the supernatural impinge upon the realism, and the reader is not always sure whether strange events should be taken literally or figuratively. When the killer is finally identified, it's almost an anti-climax, since he is less developed and far less interesting than his victims. Ultimately, it's the inherent "niceness" of Bradbury's characters and his clear belief in life's hopefulness which work to undermine the drama and fear engendered by the bizarre murders. As Bradbury makes clear, if one adapts to life's changes, one can truly "live." Mary Whipple

Ray Bradbury's ability to craft amazing prose shines through in this unheralded masterpiece of fiction. The way he wraps his life and his views on writing and the world into an entertaining exploration into the darker side of life in the 50's is superb. One of my all time favorite books. A must read for any true Bradbury fan.

I bought this book after I took my 2-yr-old son to the aquarium for the first time. He got to see a beluga whale and I wanted him to remember the experience. I LOVE this book. It's beautiful, it's short enough to keep my son's attention, and it's educational! I even learned some things about Beluga whales that I didn't know before! I wish this author had a book like this on every animal. So far I've only seen 4. I'm buying the other three today. I'm hoping they make one on owls soon! (in case they read theses reviews).

John Bishop was born in Liverpool and grew up in Winsford and Runcorn, Cheshire. In 2006, approaching his 40th birthday, John left his job to pursue a career in comedy. Within three years he was playing to sell-out arenas and had released the fastest-selling debut DVD in history. Now a household name and one of the biggest stars in comedy, John has just completed his third nationwide arena tour. John lives with his wife and three sons in Cheshire and his hobbies include his dog Bilko and supporting Liverpool, but not always in that order.

A good book about a good man!

When my signed copy of the book arrived in the mail from John I couldn't wait to crack the spine and start reading it. We have been friends a long time and I was familiar with much of the story throughout our twenty-year friendship. My wife read it before I did and her giggles made me want to get it into my hands quickly. When I was turning the pages reading about his childhood I learned much more about the John I know today. His candidness was wonderful and I so enjoyed reliving many of his experiences in the written word. I remember seeing him in a small comedy club in Manchester way before he was famous and knew he would grace much bigger venues in the future. Some of the funnier chapters for me were his travels as I was lucky enough to be a part of them as I am the 'Yank called Joe' he met in Istanbul. Personal connection aside, I think the book is a sobering yet uplifting testament to the ability of people to rise above and beyond their wildest dreams. I highly recommend the book for it's inspirational value, the fact that it's a book about a good man following his dreams and not letting his stardom change his best qualities are all just more icing on a very nice cake. Well done John!

A must read for any fan..

I have been a huge fan of John Bishop for quite a while now. When I first found out he was going to have an autobiography coming out I was excited, to say the least. The only disappointment I had was that it took me so long to get the book.

Throughout John Bishop's autobiography you get a real sense of understanding and appreciation for the man behind the jokes. It's not every day that you come across a celebrity who loves what they do without feeling the need to brag about it. I find John keeps it real. He takes you on a journey through his life and you begin to see that he's not like most celebs - he actually did things before he became famous. He talks about his family, his stumble into comedy, his bike ride across Australia and his Sport Relief challenge with passion and pride.

I did feel that he put maybe a bit too much thought and attention to his earlier life than his comedy career but I didn't for one moment find it dull.

I loved the moment when he cracked a joke about the ex-wife's, in the earlier days, only to then find her face in the audience staring back at him. I found myself, like I do when he's on the TV, laughing constantly.

The book is thoroughly enjoyable and definitely has a huge dose of John's humour in it.

The Icing on the Cake CHAPTER 1 Liza


Thirteen. Thir-teen. 13. Even the word sounds unlucky. I’m not a big believer in superstitions, but my thirteenth birthday is still two months away and so far everything about it is bad news.

I used to love birthdays. As soon as one birthday party was over, I’d be on the phone with Frankie planning the next. My birthday’s in March, so you never know what the weather will be like, and we usually have my parties indoors. But last year, when I turned twelve, I had an ice-skating party in Prospect Park and it was perfect—still cold enough so the rink didn’t get all slushy, but plenty of sun and hot chocolate to warm us up. Earlier that winter my grandmother came to visit from Georgia and taught me to knit, and I made ten ear-warmer headbands all by myself for party favors. They weren’t perfect—if you looked close enough you could see a lot of places where I dropped a stitch, and I had to start some of them over a few times—but my mom helped me finish them off so that the seams looked totally professional.

This year I wanted to do something small, but really special—just Frankie, Lillian, and me. We’ve been dying to go to Bubble Kingdom, this giant spa with fifteen hot tubs all at different temperatures, and a whole floor of special saunas with names like Crystal Muscle Relax and Soothing Color Treatment. There’s even a cold sauna with ice and snow on the walls, according to Lillian’s sister, Katie, who went to Bubble Kingdom with her track team. And on the roof, there’s an outdoor pool that’s always warm—even in the winter—with jets in the water that push you along while you’re floating, like the current in a river.

It looks like Bubble Kingdom’s going to have to wait till another birthday, though, since my unlucky thirteenth has been hijacked by my other grandmother, Nana Silver. I know that sounds weird—how can someone else take over my birthday?—but if you knew Nana Silver, you’d understand. It all started over winter break, when my little brother, Cole, and I went to California to visit our dad, where he lives now since the divorce. Cole’s only two and a half, so Nana “volunteered” to fly with us from JFK to LAX—even though my dad promised me on our last trip that the next time we visited I could babysit Cole on the plane myself (and earn thirty bucks in the process).

I love my Nana, but spending time with her can be sort of . . . well . . . exhausting. Nothing is ever exactly the way she wants it, and she’s not shy about letting anyone—or everyone—know it. First, she gave the flight attendant a lecture about putting too much ice in her Diet Coke, and then another one for not asking if Cole and I were allergic to peanuts before offering them to us (even though we’re not). She didn’t like the route the taxi driver took to my dad’s house, so she only tipped him two dollars (Dad knows her well enough to have had his wallet with him when he came out to meet us, and he slipped the driver some more cash when Nana wasn’t looking).

There’s a pool at my dad’s apartment complex—how cool is that? Not cool enough for Nana Silver, apparently. One day she complained to the lifeguard that there was too much chlorine in the water, and the next day she told him she saw algae growing near the ladder and she wouldn’t be surprised if all the children who’d been swimming got sick. Dad’s pretty much used to her by now, and Cole’s too little to be embarrassed by anything, but when Nana starts complaining about things in public, I wish I could just melt into my seat or sink to the bottom of the pool.

Acting bossy to people just trying to do their jobs wasn’t how Nana sabotaged my birthday plans, though. Instead, she activated her superpower: the ability to lay on an impenetrable guilt trip. Even my dad, who knows all of her tricks, is powerless in the face of Nana’s giver-of-guilt abilities. But he put up an impressive fight for three and a half days. Usually, Nana tries to make her only son feel bad about getting divorced and moving thousands of miles away from all of us (especially from Cole, who was just one when Dad took his job in LA). Not this time. On this trip, she surprised us all with a brand-new reason to make my dad feel guilty—me.

“Liza must be so disappointed,” Nana said to Dad at dinner on our first night in LA. I was putting ketchup on my hamburger and froze midsqueeze.

My dad looked at me curiously, but I had no idea what Nana was talking about. So I just shrugged.

“About what?” he asked.

Nana threw up her hands as if the answer was completely obvious. “Turning thirteen without a bat mitzvah, of course. You’re depriving her of her heritage—not to mention a fabulous party.” I nearly choked on my burger.

A bat mitzvah is a big event for Jewish girls when they turn thirteen (boys have bar mitzvahs). You practice for it for at least a year, and then you get up in front of the entire synagogue, your whole family, your friends, your parents’ friends, your grand-parents’ friends—you get the idea—and recite a lot of stuff in Hebrew. When it’s over, you’ve officially become “an adult”—or at least that’s what it meant, like, a thousand years ago. Most families throw a big party afterward—my cousin Phoebe had a DJ and a photo booth at hers. But unlike Nana Silver, most people don’t decide to do this only three months before their kid turns thirteen.

“She’s only half Jewish, Mom.” Dad sighed. “Jackie and I made a decision a long time ago not to raise the kids one religion or the other. You know that. We give them a little bit of both, and they can choose for themselves when they get older—or not.”

Nana is a champion eye-roller. “That was all fine and good when she was little, Adam, but now that she’s coming up on thirteen, it just seems like such a shame.” (Actually, it was never fine and good with Nana—but that’s another story.)

“It’s okay, Nana,” I jumped in, feeling bad for my dad. “Really. I don’t want a bat mitzvah—I don’t even go to Hebrew school.”

“You don’t need to remind me of that,” Nana said, shaking her head as if not sending me to Hebrew school was like shipping me off to join a gang.

“Besides,” I added, “I don’t even want a big party. Frankie and Lillian and I have been planning a totally amazing spa day for months.”

Nana waved me off like I hadn’t even been talking. “You don’t even know what you’d be missing,” she said. Then she turned back to my dad and pointed at him with a frosty-pink fingernail. “But she will in a few years, Adam, and she’ll resent you for it.”

Nana went on like this for three days, nagging my dad about this “neglect” or that “lost opportunity” every chance she got. On our fourth day in LA, we spent the morning doing a movie-studio tour. It was supposed to be just Dad and me, so we could spend some QT together and catch up. But Cole was acting cranky about staying at the apartment with Nana (can you blame him?), so the two of them ended up tagging along. After a stunt show and a tour of the 3-D animation lab, we stopped at the studio café for lunch. My little brother loved seeing all of his favorite cartoon characters come to life at the animation lab and spent a solid hour acting totally hyper—which meant he was passed out in his stroller before his chicken tenders even arrived. With Cole asleep, Nana was able to focus her full attention on bugging Dad about my “not mitzvah.”

“Look at her,” Nana said as I sipped my iced tea. She was talking to Dad but smiling at me in this very Nana Silver-ish way that told me she was about to lay on the guilt. “Such a lovely young lady—so grown up.” I could feel myself starting to blush and was relieved when she turned to my dad. “Yet for some reason her father doesn’t think she’s worth celebrating.”

Dad let the roll he’d started buttering drop onto the table. “That’s a ridiculous accusation, Mom, even for you,” he said. “Of course I think Liza’s worth celebrating—I celebrate everything about her.” If your blush can blush, mine did right then. “We’re just not going to be celebrating at the bat mitzvah she is not going to have.”

“I understand that,” Nana said. “Even if I don’t like it. Still, she’s coming of age, Adam. She’ll only turn thirteen once. Is it so wrong for me to want to recognize this milestone in my only granddaughter’s journey to womanhood?” Oh my God, I had to grip the seat of my chair with both hands to keep myself from totally bolting.

“So what do you want me to do, Mom?” Dad ran his hands through his hair the way he does when he’s really frustrated. “Throw Liza a Sweet Thirteen? You heard her—she and her friends already have birthday plans in the works.”

“At this really fun place called Bubble Kingdom, Nana,” I chimed in, giving her my best perfect-granddaughter smile. “We’re all super excited—it’s exactly what I want.”

Nana raised her eyebrows. “Bubble Kingdom? I’ve heard of that place. It’s for people who like to take baths in public with complete strangers.”

I couldn’t help myself—I laughed out loud. “It’s a spa, Nana. And the department of health gave it the highest rating. Lillian checked.”

“For your thirteenth birthday, you should be treated like the princess of your own kingdom—not soaking in other people’s bathwater and sauna sweat.”

“I think that’s enough, Mom,” my dad said.

Thankfully, the waitress arrived with our food. We were all silent for a few minutes while she served our meal and refilled water glasses.

“All right,” Dad said, rubbing his hands together. “How about we table this conversation and eat our lunch in peace?”

Nana pushed her plate away. “I don’t seem to have much of an appetite anymore.”

“Suit yourself,” Dad said, digging in to his turkey club.

I picked at my pasta salad, but I wasn’t very hungry anymore either. We sat there like that for what seemed like forever—Dad chomping on his sandwich, Nana scowling, and me looking from one to the other and wishing I could trade places with Cole—until finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Bubble Kingdom can wait,” I said. “I’ll only turn thirteen once.” I turned to my grandmother. “I’m not going to have a bat mitzvah, Nana, but I guess a bigger party could be kind of . . . um . . . fun.”

I caught my dad’s eye as Nana threw her arms around me. He looked surprised, but there was also something in his eyes that said, Welcome to the club. I guess Nana was right about me “coming of age”—I’m not too little for her guilt trips anymore.

The minute we got into the car to head back to my dad’s place, I texted Frankie and Lillian.

U won’t believe what happened, I typed. HELP!

The Good, the Bad

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: This is the sequel to Kitchen Chaos, the first Saturday Cooking Club book was which very fun and reminiscent of The Mother-Daughter Book Club in a lot of ways for me. I really enjoyed Kitchen Chaos, so I hoped The Icing on the Cake would be just as good. It was - but I have a few problems to critique.
In the first book, Frankie, Liza, and Lillian evenly share the chapters (at least, I think they did). This book was much more Liza's story so she dominated the narration. This wasn't necessarily bad, but I wanted more of Frankie and especially Lillian. Also, Frankie had the B-plot and I felt it was dealt with too easily and quickly. She seemed to be on the verge of an eating disorder, and that wasn't dealt with realistically. Also, one of my favorite parts of the first book was the actual cooking classes and those were skimmed over more this time which was sad. I love hearing about cooking and baking! This book focused more on baking and sweets, which is my forte and I wanted more of that.
So hopefully this series will continue, and the next books will showcase Frankie and Lillian more - and more of the cooking classes!

My daughter and I enjoyed getting to know Liza

Icing on the Cake is a delightful read about three girls from NYC who are going through changes as they move into their early teens. My daughter and I enjoyed getting to know Liza, Lillian and Frankie as they dealt with first crushes, a perfect sister, overbearing grandmother and divorced parents. These friends are so likable and easy to care about as they support each other, push each other to take chances and gently tell each other some of the important truths about their families i.e. that Liza's parents will never remarry and that Lillian's perfect sister might not be so happy. I especially enjoyed that the girls were racially diverse. My daughter, and her friends long for fun, light, meaningful books that have diverse characters Mostly, Icing on the Cake was just a perfect fall read and I thank Edelweiss for giving me the opportunity to review it for an honest opinion.
