Why do we women get less than marriage these days?

Modern times lie and tell you living together is a good test of your relationship, that you should see if you're compatible before you get married. This started in the 1960s, and it has become so prevalent that according the 2010 US census, only half of us who are of age are married.
But you know what? Except in the horrible cases of sex trafficking and slavery that unfortunately exist, living together instead of getting married is something we women agree to. We shouldn't agree to it, and we don't have to agree to it. We can hold out for marriage.

Manipulative and unfinished.

I signed up to receive read and review a book called, "How I Got Him to Marry Me." by Cherise Kelley. I normally read books with a paranormal/thriller/mystery slant to them, but periodically I need a brain refresher and will step out of my normal genre. So when I read the description on Good Reads, I though, "Hey, why not?" Half way through the book I realized that it is a perfect combination of "Chicken Soup for the Bride To Be's Soul" and "The Rules" by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider. As I read on through the book I realized it began to bother me. It sounded a lot like a counter book to "He's Just Not That Into You." Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo put out by whiny women who want to be wives.

The author starts out with a wonderful introduction to her idea on the book. I wanted to see a case study after reading her introduction. I wanted to find out at the end what her theories or ideas as to why this was, but instead, it's a book of women who go out of their way to plot or force their man to marry you. There's no ending.

From the author: "...Living together instead of getting married began to be acceptable in the 1960s hippie culture, and by the 1980s, many young men no longer saw the point in marriage. I watched the culture change, but I didn't catch on until it was almost too late for me. Before the 1980s, the man was the one who pushed for marriage. By the 1990s, living together instead of being married was almost expected among young people. Now, in the 21st century, women have a hard time getting married, even if we really want to. If you've been under a rock and haven't noticed this, then search the Internet for the page titled "US Census Marriage and Divorce," and prepare to have your mind blown"......" and "....I'm almost 50 years old now, and I'm a trained teacher. I'm tempted to lecture you in this book. I'm tempted to read between the lines of all these true stories that I've collected from women who have managed to get their boyfriends to marry them, to cull out and spell out what they did that worked and what they did that was foolish. I'm tempted beat you over the head with it.
In short: I'm tempted to tell you what to do...."

I am not sure if it is because I am too independent of a woman, if it is generational, or if it was the book itself, but I was really unhappy with it. It was well written in the grammar, spelling, writing aspect of it. It is even an interesting topic, which is why I had chosen it to review. Overall, however, it was just alright.

I read the first 30 or so stories. Each story presents a woman dating/in a relationship with a man who essentially wants to be a wife and not a "girlfriend." Each story read the same: Somewhat spoiled sounding women who get fed up, put their foot down and plot in a manner to make this man their husband. Women in our society, American society, already has enough stigma attached to them on being high maintenanced, spoiled, demanding, conniving, and manipulative. This book absolutely did not help the cause.

I skimmed through the rest of the book, in hopes to find a chapter or two on a summary of what the author's intent with publishing this book was. I had hoped to find some kind of lesson or deep thought. I didn't. Instead the book just ended with a "Thank you" to the brides /wives that had written in; leaving me with the feeling the book and idea are completely dropped. I wanted to see a case study after reading her introduction. I wanted to find out at the end what her theories or ideas as to why this was, but instead, it's a book of women who literally mapped out ways they manipulated their mates into marriage.

I guess, what it comes down to for me is that this is a really wonderful idea for a book, but truly just seems like the start of something greater. The stories of each woman's path into marriage is interesting. But I want to know a psychological view on it. I want the meat of it. I have always been told by older generations, men and even other women, that if a man wants to marry you, HE WILL. If he hasn't after two years, odds are, you're not the one. Tripping him, twisting him, and making him fall for marriage is not a healthy way into a long lasting marriage.

informative and fun

Back in the 1950s everyone waited until they were married to sleep together and everyone got married. Or at least that is what the norm was. But enter the 1960s and everything changed. Free love, no strings attached kinds of relationships began to become more normal and accepted. It is now over 50 years later and the difficult part of a relationship for a woman is often getting her boyfriend to actually marry her. The author/facilitator put together 50 stories about different women who were married after 1990 and what they did to get their boyfriend to become their husband.

I really enjoyed this. The stories were well written and really fun to read. The author did a great job of picking interesting stories. While I didn't have to deal with this issue, I found the statistics she gave alarming and the advice and stories fun and informative. Even if you are already married, you can still really enjoy the stories in this book. Will be checking out the other books by this author.

Although I don't think much about shacking up (otherwise known as living together) many of the gals in this book did. I enjoyed reading this because it basically shows that women can get and stay married even in these so-called modern times.
Myself, I met and married my husband too early to be included in this book--it had to be 1990 or later. I married in 1986. One thing I did do like many of the other girls here--out was going to be marriage or nothing. I'm like the gal in the last account (accept for dress size). I made myself worthy of marriage with skills and responsibility so he accepted that.

Good marriages are of great value to your family, neighborhood, state and country. They help add stability and prosperity. I liked that these girls were marriage minded.

TheInternment Chronicles end with a return to the floating city in the sky. Morganhas found only continued oppression during her stay on the ground after herescape from her sky-borne city. There, she was under the thumb of theautocratic King Furlow, who strictly regulates the lives of the Internmentpopulation. But on the ground, King Ingram cares more for his war than for hispeople. By holding Princess Celeste of Internment hostage, he has brought thefloating city to its knees. To keep his daughter safe, King Furlow allows themining of phosane, the element rare on the ground but common on Internment thatcan power King Ingram's war machines. When Morgan's friend, the scientificallyminded Pen, calculates that Internment may be slowly falling from the sky dueto the mining operation, Morgan convinces the king to allow her to return.However, it seems that Pen and much of Morgan's family will be left on theground. Once back in Internment, Morgan becomes further involved in theintrigues of the royal family, eventually realizing that a coup may be the onlything that can save her city. DeStefano brings her story to a close withunlikely physics, convoluted politics, but fairly intriguing characters.Princess Celeste, the embodiment of privilege, must find a way to survive whenher circumstances change, for example. Readers follow Morgan as she tries tofind a way back to her home planet, Havalais; keep Internment from sinking intoHavalias; stop the warring kings from killing each other and destroying theirkingdoms, all while keeping her loved ones safe. Destefano Does It Again...Delve Into Internment's World Again

I'm sad to see this series end, but I anticipate the next literary wonder from Lauren Destefano. Everything I've read of hers has been s favorite of mine. I've cried with her, laughed with her, and felt loss with her through her realistic and complex characters.
This was the final installment of the Internment Chronicles. I waited and eagerly anticipated each book's release, and I had to wait several months longer than I would've wished to get this book into my hands. The Chemical Garden trilogy was art. I knew the next set of books would be awesome, and she didn't disappoint. I cannot describe how amazing her writing is. It just is.
Morgan Stockhour is trying to save the world she was so desperate to escape from: once King Ingram from Havalais knows the secret of Internment's electricity, he is devious enough to get his hands on it. However, Internment is dying, falling slowly from the sky, and Morgan and Pen are desperate to save their home. Princess Celeste and Prince Azure a are completely at the mad king's mercy...but is King Ingram any different from King Furlow of Internment? Who can save the beautiful floating city from those who wish to exploit it? Can Morgan and Pen do anything now that they are on land?
I was sad to see it end. But happy with the ending. No spoilers...but I do hope that Basil and Morgan see their happily ever after. Destefano has a way of tying up loose ends, but leaving some loose to keep you guessing: I figure it's because in real life, nothing just ends. Every end is another beginning. It's almost like she leaves her novels open for those of us who like to imagine more from Internment and another book one day.
I don't know how long I can go without another new release date from Destefano. She makes Young Adult literature mature enough to be enjoyed for all ages; she helps the genre gain credibility as something separate from "children's books." I don't know what she has looming on the horizon, but whatever it is, I can guarantee this: it will be good. And worth the wait.

Broken Crowns

Now the series is moving! In the final book, my attention has been grabbed throughout the whole book! Which is a big thing for me, since I had my issues with the first two books.

But anywho…

Things are now moving, plans are being made, and a king may lose his place. The Internment is sinking. A plan needs to be made fast. The prince also comes down. Things are moving fast, not everyone will agree, but in the end they will come together to finally make things right.

I was really happy with the way this series ended. The author has been one of my favorite for while and I can't wait to see what's next.

Best of the series

High expectations were met. Every story worth reading, especially those by Ambrose Bierce, Henry James and Anton Chekov. The stories were not exactly "short" however. Several would also classify as novellas but that did not detract from their quality of excellence...merely the time to finish. This book represents the best of the series so far.

A Nice Budget Selection of Eleven Classic Short Stories

This collection is a very basic presentation of eleven classic short stories presented for reading on the Kindle.

Are they the "Best Short Stories of All Time"? Some Marketing hyperbole that is, but I will say that they are very good. I've purchased this collection and several others so that I would have a variety of stories to read on my Kindle, and I also wanted to try out some of the products available from Amazon that are modestly priced.

The format of this Kindle book is quite minimal, offering only a table of contents and then the stories themselves. If you are wanting each story to be accompanied by an explanation or introduction, or are interested in the publication history of the story or the translation provided (if the work is translated), then you will not find that with this particular collection. It does include a very brief generic biography for each author at the end of the book.

Most importantly however, the stories themselves have been very nicely selected, and represent a short collection of some very high quality works by very notable authors. I have all three of these "Best Short Stories of All Time" collections, and in this Volume III I believe that a couple of the stories may be more obscure than those included in the earlier volumes I and II, but they are still well worth reading.

The stories included are:

1. Bartleby, The Scrivener, by Herman Melville, originally published in 1853 and later included in the collection The Piazza Tales. This is one of Melville's most famous stories, and has been included in other collections of Melville's writings, including Herman Melville : Pierre, Israel Potter, The Piazza Tales, The Confidence-Man, Tales, Billy Budd (Library of America)).

2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, originally published in 1922 (currently also available in the anthology The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Jazz Age Stories (Penguin Classics)).

3. Daisy Miller: A Study, by Henry James, first published in 1879 (currently also included in Daisy Miller (Penguin Classics)).

4. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, by Mark Twain, originally published in 1865 and considered to be Twain's first great success as a writer. (It has also been included in the volume Mark Twain: Collected Tales, Sketches, Speeches, and Essays, Vol. 1: 1852-1890 (Library of America)).

5. The Machine Stops, by E. M. Forster, a science fiction short story originally published in 1909. (included with Selected Stories (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics)).

6. The House With The Mezzanine, by Anton Chekhov (written as "Tchekoff" in the Kindle edition) (included in About Love and Other Stories (Oxford World's Classics)).

7. The Figure in the Carpet, by Henry James, originally published in 1896. (included with Henry James: Complete Stories, 1892-1898 (Library of America)).

8. The Secret Sharer, by Joseph Conrad, originally published in 1909, (included in Typhoon and Other Tales (Oxford World's Classics)).

9. The Prussian Officer, by D. H. Lawrence (included with The Prussian Officer and Other Stories).

10. Gooseberries, by Anton Chekhov (also included in the same Chekhov collection as (6) above).

11. The Damned Thing, by Ambrose Bierce, originally published in 1893. (included in Ambrose Bierce: The Devil's Dictionary, Tales, and Memoirs (Library of America)).

As mentioned earlier, at the end of the book there is a section giving short biographies of the authors - a few paragraphs on each, nothing more than the briefest of outlines on when and where they were born and very short descriptions of their life and major works.

Recognize that all of these stories are available in various places at no cost with a small amount of effort (do a Google search and you'll have them in seconds). So that is an alternative. Purchasing them in this collection saves that effort and is a convenience, and my conclusion is that this is a very good quality selection of stories, most of which are among the best by the authors selected.

For a penny less than a dollar, this is a reasonable value. I give this four stars because these are public domain stories, the selection of 11 stories is not particularly generous (even fewer stories than Vol. I which included only 12 stories, and Vol. II which included 15 stories), and only the minimal required effort has been put into packaging these stories into this Kindle e-book. The stories themselves are five star worthy.

Some of the best I have read!

I love short stories. I started with Stephen King's Skeleton Crew and Nightmares & Dreamscapes.

My favorite short stories collection is Nine stories from J.D. Salinger.

I bought this one because i wanted a collection of stories from different authors and different genres.

The best short stories of all time? It is hard to say, because it dosen't include stories from more recent authors.

But They are some of the best I have read. I give it five star.

A must read for medical school interviews

Absolutely fantastic book. Because ethical dilemmas are never black and white, it can be difficult to know which direction is best. This book does a phenomenal job of breaking down many common ethical issues and tries to offer a few golden guidelines to handle most cases (but these guidelines do not apply in every case). Additionally, the book gives numerous scenarios to apply what has been learned to real world examples. I like to read the scenario and think about the ethical issues at hand. I then decide on what I would do before reading on. Overall fantastic book!!

Ethical issues are never black and white. However, this book does a great job discussing common ethical issues while providing insight and direction. The chapters are short and sweet, yet to the point and thorough. It's my best text book this semester.
