Broken Crowns (The Internment Chronicles Book 3), by Lauren DeStefano

War rages everywhere and Morgan is caught in the middle in the haunting conclusion of The Internment Chronicles, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Chemical Garden trilogy.

The city is falling out of the sky…

Morgan always thought it was just a saying. A metaphor. The words of the dying. But as they look up at the floating island that was their home, Pen and Morgan make a horrible discovery—Internment is sinking.

And it’s all Morgan’s fault.

Corrupted from the inside by one terrible king and assailed from the outside for precious resources by another, Internment could be destroyed because Morgan couldn’t keep a secret. As two wars become one, Morgan must find a way to bring her two worlds together to stop the kings that wage them…

Or face the furthest fall yet.

Gr 7 Up—DeStefano's wonderful conclusion to her "Internment Chronicles" trilogy (S. & S.) combines dystopia with a love more complex than simple romance. After the previous volume in the series, King Ingram of Havalais and his soldiers have flown to Internment, the city in the sky, to force King Fulcrum and his people to deliver phosane, the mineral that Ingram believes can be refined to fuel his jets for his war on the neighboring kingdom of Dastor. Ingram holds Fulcrum's daughter, Celeste, hostage in Internment while her beloved, Nim, can only wait below and hope for news. The brilliant Pen has been distant, studying science texts and observing the floating city when she finally comes to her best friend, Morgan, to reveal that Internment is slowly descending. Not long after, Ingram returns and wants Morgan and her betrothed, Basil, to return with him to Internment to convince the people there that cooperation is for the best. Morgan takes Pen's information with her, as well as a packet of letters for Celeste, hoping that she and Basil can somehow keep their city in the air and save everyone they love from the two despots. The primary characters here are in a situation made desperate by tyrants, war, dysfunctional traditions, and simple physics, but their love for each other and their countries allows them to prevail. VERDICT While violence is ultimately part of the resolution here, it is the characters' steadfastness, cleverness, hope, and love that is celebrated. A triumphant, uplifting dystopia.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI

Review
"A satisfying conclusion for series fans" (Kirkus Reviews December 15, 2015)

TheInternment Chronicles end with a return to the floating city in the sky. Morganhas found only continued oppression during her stay on the ground after herescape from her sky-borne city. There, she was under the thumb of theautocratic King Furlow, who strictly regulates the lives of the Internmentpopulation. But on the ground, King Ingram cares more for his war than for hispeople. By holding Princess Celeste of Internment hostage, he has brought thefloating city to its knees. To keep his daughter safe, King Furlow allows themining of phosane, the element rare on the ground but common on Internment thatcan power King Ingram's war machines. When Morgan's friend, the scientificallyminded Pen, calculates that Internment may be slowly falling from the sky dueto the mining operation, Morgan convinces the king to allow her to return. However, it seems that Pen and much of Morgan's family will be left on theground. Once back in Internment, Morgan becomes further involved in theintrigues of the royal family, eventually realizing that a coup may be the onlything that can save her city. DeStefano brings her story to a close withunlikely physics, convoluted politics, but fairly intriguing characters.Princess Celeste, the embodiment of privilege, must find a way to survive whenher circumstances change, for example. It's a satisfying conclusion for seriesfans. (Science fiction. 12-18) (Kirkus Reviews December 15, 2015)

Broken Crowns, the third bookin the Internment Chronicles seriesis set in a future dystopian universe. Readers follow Morgan as she tries tofind a way back to her home planet, Havalais; keep Internment from sinking intoHavalias; stop the warring kings from killing each other and destroying theirkingdoms, all while keeping her loved ones safe. As she works with Pen, Nim,and Basil to find a way back to Havalais, she tries to trust Prince Azure as hehas been both an ally and foe in the past. Through careful planning andscheming, Prince Azure is able to smuggle Morgan and Basil back to Havaliaswhere they meet with Princess Celeste and learn the truth about her conditionand plans for uniting Havalais and Internment.

Broken Crowns will appeal primarilyto readers of the first two books in the series. DeStefano’s writing style isheavy on exposition and light on action which can lessen the appeal of thebooks. While the series is set in the dystopian future with the feudingkingdoms, it has a middle ages-type feel.—CharlaHollingsworth. (VOYA February 2016)

"a page-turner as it gallops through to a stunning but ultimately happy conclusion" (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books March 2016)

Having escaped Internment, their restrictive floating island home (in Perfect Ruin, BCCB 12/13), and navigated the perilous political waters of the kingdom below (in Burning Kingdoms, BCCB 6/15), sixteen-year-old Morgan and her friends now face their greatest challenges yet. Reduced to pawns in a dangerous political game, the teens realize that they must wrest control from their two power-mad kings if they have any chance of saving themselves. Unfortunately, former ally Princess Celeste has returned home to Internment, and her unpredictable brother Prince Azure has been sent as a diplomat and political prisoner in her place. Even worse, Internment is sinking, spelling certain destruction for both kingdoms if they can’t find away to stop it. With time running out and no capable adults to rely on, the reluctant
Morgan must wrangle her disparate friends into working together on a complex plot that could save the world or finally destroy them all. This third volume of a creative and captivating series finds narrator Morgan coming fully into her own, fulfilling the potential for heroine status established in previous volumes. The story drags somewhat in the beginning as Morgan continues to wallow in indecision on the sidelines, but once she dedicates herself to a plan, the novel becomes a page-turner as it gallops through to a stunning but ultimately happy conclusion. The narrative never returns to some of its compelling side characters, which may disappoint some readers, but this has always been Morgan’s story first and foremost, and with this final volume, she clearly earns the attention. (BCCB March 2016)

"DeStefano knows how to set a stage and write strong voices -- especially her female characters...Those who've read the first two books will certainly want to read this one"  (Booklist May 2016)

Destefano Does It Again...Delve Into Internment's World Again
By Stephanie P.
I'm sad to see this series end, but I anticipate the next literary wonder from Lauren Destefano. Everything I've read of hers has been s favorite of mine. I've cried with her, laughed with her, and felt loss with her through her realistic and complex characters.
This was the final installment of the Internment Chronicles. I waited and eagerly anticipated each book's release, and I had to wait several months longer than I would've wished to get this book into my hands. The Chemical Garden trilogy was art. I knew the next set of books would be awesome, and she didn't disappoint. I cannot describe how amazing her writing is. It just is.
Morgan Stockhour is trying to save the world she was so desperate to escape from: once King Ingram from Havalais knows the secret of Internment's electricity, he is devious enough to get his hands on it. However, Internment is dying, falling slowly from the sky, and Morgan and Pen are desperate to save their home. Princess Celeste and Prince Azure a are completely at the mad king's mercy...but is King Ingram any different from King Furlow of Internment? Who can save the beautiful floating city from those who wish to exploit it? Can Morgan and Pen do anything now that they are on land?
I was sad to see it end. But happy with the ending. No spoilers...but I do hope that Basil and Morgan see their happily ever after. Destefano has a way of tying up loose ends, but leaving some loose to keep you guessing: I figure it's because in real life, nothing just ends. Every end is another beginning. It's almost like she leaves her novels open for those of us who like to imagine more from Internment and another book one day.
I don't know how long I can go without another new release date from Destefano. She makes Young Adult literature mature enough to be enjoyed for all ages; she helps the genre gain credibility as something separate from "children's books." I don't know what she has looming on the horizon, but whatever it is, I can guarantee this: it will be good. And worth the wait.
★★★★★. ★★★★★★★★★★ if I could rate all her books at once.
If you haven't read a book by Destefano...what ARE you waiting for? Hello!

Broken Crowns

Now the series is moving! In the final book, my attention has been grabbed throughout the whole book! Which is a big thing for me, since I had my issues with the first two books.

But anywho…

Things are now moving, plans are being made, and a king may lose his place. The Internment is sinking. A plan needs to be made fast. The prince also comes down. Things are moving fast, not everyone will agree, but in the end they will come together to finally make things right.

I was really happy with the way this series ended. The author has been one of my favorite for while and I can't wait to see what's next.
