Super-spy-in-training Ben Ripley is headed for enemy territory. When a training exercise at the CIA's Academy of Espionage takes a wrong turn and 13-year-old Ben accidentally blows up the principal's office, he's thrown out of school faster than readers can say, "undercover." But before Ben even has the chance to settle back into civilian life, his nemesis at SPYDER, a top-secret organization of evildoers, offers him a chance to get back in the game—but this time, he'll be playing for the bad guys. Is this all part of a secret CIA plan to infiltrate SPYDER? Or is Ben running a one-man undercover operation? Gibbs (Spy Camp, 2013, etc.) leaves readers (and Ben!) wondering a bit too long, but fans of the series will still enjoy the ride. Ben is as witty and entertaining a protagonist as ever, and readers will get a kick out of his new "friends" at evil-spy school. Ashley Sparks, a bitter ex-gymnast robbed of her chance for Olympic gold but carrying a torch for Ben, is a particularly welcome addition. Ashley provides a nice foil to Erica Hale, Ben's secret CIA crush, though Gibbs passes up the opportunity to really capitalize on the potential for a full-fledged, superspy love triangle. Super fun wish fulfillment

I will always buy the next installment of this series, and this is an excellent example of the reason why.
The reason? These books are just so much fun!
I mean who wouldn't want to be a spy at the age of 13? Then to go undercover and work for the bad guys? Beat up bullies at middle school with martial arts training? So much wish-fulfilment, you can't not have fun with it.
And that's where this book does right where the last book misfired a little for me. This book is all about Ben Ripley. He's the main character from start to finish, and he's awesome. Spy Camp, in my opinion, placed him strangely as the first-person narrator of another person's story (Erika Hale). But this one is near perfect.
With a new location at "Evil Spy School" we get to meet some new characters. Ashley and Nefarious were great additions and I loved them both. They had good backstories, although one of them felt a little flat.
The book had great suspense, which was easy given that most of it is a giant undercover plot with the fear of always getting caught.
And that's actually where things went a little south for me. This is the reason for 4 instead of 5 starts...
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
The part where Ben gets uncovered as a double-agent doesn't feel right. There is no way he should have been able to escape that situation. If the bad guys rigged the elaborate trap just for him, you'd have expected they would've also rigged a more idiot-proof way of catching him. It took me out of the story a bit.
That nit-pic aside, I loved all the extras added to the end. It was a great way to round out the book.
I'm already eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

Ben Switches Sides

It’s time for a new school year, and Ben Ripley is enrolling in the Wiseman Preparatory Academy. No, this isn’t the new cover name for the spy school he attended last semester. This is the name of evil organization SPYDER’s school to train future agents to carry out their evil purposes. Ben has finally accepted SPYDER’s offer to join the dark side, but only after he was kicked out of the CIA’s spy school for something that was only partially his fault.
Really, Ben thinks he is on an undercover assignment. At least, he hopes he’s on an undercover assignment. With no way to contact anyone outside of his new school, he’s only guessing at what he’s supposed to be doing. Can Ben learn what SPYDER’s latest plans are? If so, can he get the word to anyone in time to foil them?
Those who have been following this series know exactly what to expect from book three, and they won’t be disappointed. The plot moves forward at a steady pace until the final third where it really takes off. The characters are fun. And the humor is top notch. I was laughing in the break room at work and had to share a few lines with my co-workers, who enjoyed them as well. The real target audience, kids, will definitely love the humor and be drawn in to the story.
Whether this is your introduction to Ben or your third adventure with him, the pages will turn much too quickly, leaving you wanting his next case. I’m definitely anxious to find out what happens to him next.

The third book brings the protagonist, 13 year old Ben, enrolling in a new school, the cover for the “evil” spy training unit SPYDER. Ben got into some trouble at his old school, and he’s got to make new friends and see what he can learn now. He’s hoping that he is expected to gather information about SPYDER’s next evil plot, but without his familiar friends, he’s working without a net.
I’ve heard good things about this author: humor and clever twists abound, and who can resist imagining themselves as a spy: gathering intelligence and information to defeat evil plans. Ben is middling-level clever: he’s using what he’s learned already to manoeuver in this new world, and there is quite a bit of set-up required for him to find his place, make new friends and discover the teachers to fear. The action picks up dramatically in the last third of the book: some fight scenes, danger and the mystery of Just What is the plan kept me engaged and entertained.
Secondary characters are cleverly introduced, and dialogue and ridiculous situations play heavily: some moments are funny from the start, others develop as such. Adults are a bit on the clueless side throughout, but not to a distracting point.
Narration for this story is provided by Gibson Frazier. He manages the narration capably, inserting appropriate pauses, inflections and tone changes that highlight the text and the action on the page. I appreciated the lack of “putting on” a voice to sound younger or older, and his clear presentation of Ben’s point of view was a wonderful highlight.
Perfect for readers aged 8 and above, there are some words that will require parental assistance, and parents will find this a clever ‘share’ title.
