A beautiful and sensitively written novel

A beautiful and sensitively written novel. Even months after reading it, I remember it clearly and parts of the story come to mind quite often. I bought the hardback for a friend of mine who grew up in Malaysia during the same time that the early part of the story takes place. She loved it and found it very evocative of her experience as a child in Malaysia.

The tension both the young teenage boy and the reader experiences in the book is finding the balance of truths between what you hear from his mentor and sensei (Aikido master who is also the also Japanese diplomat) and the gradual realisation that he is not all you first thought he was.

This book also gave me a greater understanding of the tensions and the harmonies between the various races who lived in Malaysia at this time during and after WW2.

It is a book about many things, but perhaps above all it is a book about loyalty, deceit and how a young man weaves through these dichotomies to survive.

Enjoyed the book. A gal in our book group recommended it. The fact that I went to Penang on my first trip to Asia made it more interesting to me.

A real lesson in forgiveness. Lots of metaphors and similes. Misguided youthful idealism, great tragedy, and loss.
