The author had his son memorize the 50 word vocabulary in Green Eggs and Ham beforehand, then he was able to read the book.

The author simply wrote the 50 word vocabulary found in the book Green Eggs and Ham on index cards and taught his son to memorize them over a period of several weeks. Once his son memorized the 50 words he was able to read the entire book. But being able to read 50 words does not make a reader. Next, the author tried to do the same thing with The Cat in the Hat which has about a 100 word vocabulary. He said it did not work any more, but he did not give any explanation about why it didn't work anymore. I suspect he might have come to the same conclusion that many educators have come to who are proponents of phonics instruction: memorizing all the words in the English language is simply not practical. It is, however, a good idea to have a child memorize the first 300 words in Fry's lists because these words comprise two-thirds of all written material. However, this is usually done over several grades--it is never attempted in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the student should receive good phonics instruction with a program like Orton-Gillingham so he can learn to sound out the majority of words in English for himself.

My Child Can Read Green Eggs and Ham

This book delivered just what was promised. With a little work from you and your child, he/she can read Green Eggs and Ham. Just make sure to have fun while doing it. The technique was surprisingly simple, close to what we were doing anyway. In fact for me it was a head slapper. I thought, "Why didn't I think of this?" Nevertheless, it's worth the $.99 I paid. My son and I had fun and now he has a lot more confidence because he can read a book.
