That little voice in your head... it's an alien, and it's telling you to read this book!

I devoured this book. After loving the Twilight Saga, it was great to read something new from Stephenie Meyer. The writing style is a definite improvement as she switches from the different POV’s effortlessly (and with clear distinction) of Melanie and Wanderer (Wanda).

The protagonists of the story captivated me, one for their strength of character, and the other, well because Wanderer isn't actually a person yet was assigned such beautiful humanistic traits.

I’m a freak for sci-fi, so when I found out her latest adventure was going to be in this genre, I was fangirling to the max! Growing up in the 80’s-90’s and a massive fan of The Bodysnatchers, and The Invasion, The Host took this theme and ran with it in a completely new direction. I like that the action was gritty and raw, and the sci-fi elements weren't explained. Essentially a character driven story, which are my favorite books to read.

There could have been more sci-fi to this story, but I feel that it would have distracted from the heart of the novel… it was Mel ad Wanda – and their perception of the world they find themselves in. Neither are science geeks or physicists, so to indulge in the technological advancement of Wanda’s race would have been unnecessary. Friends of mine feigned disappointment because of the lack of science fiction, but I think it was spot on for this tale.

With chase scenes, social dynamics, internal turmoil (in more than one way), The Host is an incredible addition the Meyers collection. Even though the premise is not entirely original, it introduces an entirely new worlds and infinite possibilities for exploring the universe of this novel.

With two more novels planned (and listed on Goodreads), I’m still waiting eagerly for their release. I almost want to give Stephenie Meyer a call and offer typing services so she can dictate to me. She is so obviously busy that I’d do all I can to see the next installments hit the shelves.

Amazing Book, Just Be Careful Who You Buy From

The book itself is amazing. Your opinion on Twilight should have nothing to do with your decision of whether or not to read this book because let me tell you, they are nothing alike. Personally I loved the Twilight series because it was unique and different and refreshing because it wasn't a regurgitation of the same bloodlusting bad buys like most other books, shows, and movies, but that's for another time. Walk into this with an open mind and you won't regret it. That being said, I continue to my review.
The Host is an amazing stand alone and I really hope Stephanie Meyer gets to writing a sequel. I love the world she created because it's an alien invasion but it's not your typical kill humans/destroy the planet kind of aliens, they are as peaceful as they come yet still are the antagonists of the story. It was beautifully written and the tone of the book was very unique. Throughout the book you are following the main character Melanie who has been taken by and now sharing her body with a Soul named Wanderer. There is a lot of internal struggle for both of them both physically and mentally. Melanie has to fight for her life and try to convince the Soul that humans can be good and don't have to be extinguished all while struggling to remain conscious and present in her own body, and Wanda (Wanderer) struggles with the decision to help the Souls or Melanie. Either way she has to tread softly or she could ultimately get herself and Melanie killed. There isn't much action but it is definitely thought provoking and a very quick read.
I would recommend this book although I would be cautious of what third party you buy from. I do not remember the seller I bought from off hand (I purchased and had to exchange a while back but ultimately ended up returning completely. I will update when I find the information.) The seller I bought from advertized the book as new but it was heavily used. I exchanged the book and again it was obviously used. There were scratches and scrapes on both books, they were dirty (it looked like it was stepped on or stamped on the top of one of them like it might have been a school or library book), they looked like they had been dropped and left on the ground or maybe got a little wet because the pages were slightly crinkled, the edges and borders of the book had dents and small tears, but worst of all the front cover on the second book had a crease down the entire thing like it had been bent a million times. Also the first book had a plastic sheet around it but it had been completely torn apart and there were even pieces missing. The pictures are what it looked like straight out of the packaging. Another thing, it was strange that the shipping and return addresses were different places and the return label wouldn't show up so I had to continually contact them. The only good thing I have to say about the seller is they were quick to reply and refund the money. Their customer service was alright but their products were not as advertised.

Great! A favorite of mine!

I can easily say this is one of my favorite books ever. I did like the Twilight series (books, not movies, obviously), but I went into reading this with doubt that she could pull off another book. But I honestly liked this book more than the whole Twilight series. It does have another lead female character, Wanda, that tends to be a tad weaker than I'd like, mentally and emotionally, but it's balanced out with a strong female lead, Melanie, that's literally sharing the same body, so it works well.

I also like that, for an alien invasion plot, it's not the stereotypical "everyone will be murdered by extra terrestrials" theme. The aliens in this story are very peaceful (except the one) and they only "invade" to help keep the planet from eventually destroying itself, like they do to other worlds as well.

The story really just draws you in, at least for me. When Wanda/Melanie are severely dehydrated and have no hope of finding what they're looking for in a desert, you're right there with them. When they're happy, sad, scared, you feel it too. It's just a great read that I constantly go back to again and again. Highly recommended! :-)
