Reading this book was a very eye-opening experience for me. I enjoyed reading this book very much because it educated me on a matter I previously knew little about. Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals is her personal account as one of the first nine black students to integrate into a white school in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. Melba’s mother was a school teacher and so education was always an important to her and her family. She did well in school and her mother often helped her further her studies. One day in school the teacher passed around a sign-up sheet for students who wanted to attend Little Rock’s Central High School because of the Supreme Court Ruling in Brown vs. the Board of Education. Melba signed up not thinking much about it. A few years later Melba received a phone call in which she was informed that she would be attending Central High School. She was thrilled while her mother was upset that she hadn’t told her. Things got very bad. People started to threaten the nine black students who had been chosen to go to Central as well as their families. On the first day of school, white segregationists started riots and taunted the students who tried to attend the school. When the 101st Airborne unit was assigned to the school, the students were able to attend but the taunting and violence didn’t stop. The students were continually harassed and abused physically and mentally while they attended Central High School. I could relate to Melba because as a high school student all I want is to blend into the background. Melba just wanted a good education at this big, amazing school. She never wanted people taunting her and she never wanted to be in the news. This book may be seen as controversial to some. If you’re not okay with reading the hard truth you should not read this book. Melba Patillo Beals does not sugar coat anything. She describes exactly what happened to her and some of the other students. When things like this happen it does not help to try to make things sound better than they were. Melba Patillo Beals writes with honesty and clarity. If there is anything readers should learn from this book it is perseverance. Melba never backed down even though there were many times she felt like leaving the school for good. She showed her tormenters that she was not going to let their abuse affect her education. I would recommend this book to anyone 16 and older. It is not too graphic but I think you need to be older to appreciate everything that happens in the book. I think men and women everywhere should read this book because it lets us see what really went on inside that high school over 50 years ago.

I now know why this book was recommended on Oprah. This book is well written and is an honest look back into a part of history we rarely get to hear.
