Only for very young teens/tweens

I started the first book with a sense of hopefulness. The characters, while understandably unrealistic, were somewhat engaging. The story was pretty interesting, too. Time travel, alternate universes...definitely worth following that one. It was charming in many ways.
But--while the overall writing is pretty good, the pace is numbing beyond description. And although I realize this is really a YA series, I did sometimes feel I was trapped in a high school production of a Cinderalla fantasy, complete with cardboard one-dimensional characterizations. It seems that the same events occur over and over and over and over--get the picture? For some maddening reason, I kept reading the additional books, in some kind of obsessive determination to see if something new happened, or if a resolution occurred, or a character actually evolved. Sadly, until the very last book, Leaves of Revolution, nothing much happened.
I don't want to trash this series. Really! If I had a 13 or 14-year-old daughter that I was trying to distract from Pretty Little Liars or some equally awful TV, I'd buy every one of these books and pray for her to get interested and read them. I'm just not sure that even someone that young could stand the slow, slow, slow pace of the story.

So far my favorite read of 2013!

For lack of a better word the series, in my humble opinion, is perfect. Quinn is a great character! She is more or less thrown into this new world where she is expected to make decisions that no 16-17 year old should have to make. Throughout this book you watch her grow up and become quite the lady! The family she discovers in this other world was incredible. I have never been so in love with so many characters. There are 13 children in this family and the love they have for one another was one of things that kept me reading this book. It was so neat to see the relationship between all of them. It was equally as nice to see how the parents were with the children. I felt that all the characters were developed to the point where I could easily picture them in my head and even hear how they would sound when they spoke and the different mannerisms they might use. There is a love story in this series… actually there are quite a few but the main one is between Quinn and William. I really enjoyed watching their relationship blossom in these books. The series is much more than a love story though. It's about making decisions that might not be what you intended for your life but having the faith that you are doing the right thing. I would consider this for an age group of 12 and up. There was nothing inappropriate in these books. It reminded me of the old movies where things are implied but not shown. Our oldest daughter will start middle school next year and I would have no problem allowing her to read these. In fact I will be encouraging her too. I really look forward to the day when I can introduce her to all these characters that I have been reading.

Amazing Series! A Must Read!

I started reading the first book, "Seeds of Discovery" after finding it in the kindle store one weekend and after that I was completely hooked I finished the whole series that one weekend. The Dusk Gate series has a bit of it all, Mystery, Danger, Romance, it will capture your heart no matter your age. I Promise once you pick the first book up you wont be able to put the series down until you have read them all, and even then you'll be craving more!
