EHRMAN DEFENDS THE VIEW THAT JESUS EXPECTED AN "IMMINENT" END

Bart D. Ehrman (born 1955) is Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; he is also a former evangelical, having studied at Moody Bible Institute and graduated from Wheaton College. He has written many other books, such as Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth, Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why, Lost Christianities: The Battles for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew, Truth and Fiction in The Da Vinci Code: A Historian Reveals What We Really Know about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Constantine, etc.
He wrote in the Preface to this 1999 book, "Jesus fully expected that the history of the world as we know it... was going to come to a screeching halt, that God was soon going to intervene in the affairs of this world, overthrow the forces of evil in a cosmic act of judgment, destroy huge masses of humanity, and abolish existing human political and religious institutions. All this would be a prelude to the arrival of a new order on earth, the Kingdom of God. Moreover, Jesus expected that this cataclysmic end of history would come in his own generation, at least during the lifetime of his disciples." (Pg. x)
He says, "At this stage my point is quite simple. The earliest sources record Jesus as propounding an apocalyptic message. But, interestingly enough, some of the most clearly apocalyptic traditions come to be 'toned down' as we move further away from Jesus' life in the 20s to Gospel materials produced near the end of the first century." He then compares Mk 9:1 with Lk 9:27, as an example. (Pg. 130)
He observes, "The earliest sources that we have consistently ascribe an apocalyptic message to Jesus. This message begins to be muted by the end of the first century (e.g., in Luke), until it virtually disappears (e.g., in John), and begins, then, to be explicitly rejected and spurned (e.g., in Thomas). It appears that when the end never did arrive, Christians had to take stock of the fact that Jesus had said it would and changed his message accordingly. You can hardly blame them." (Pg. 134)
After quoting a number of Jesus' statements, he comments, "What matters for my purposes here is not whether Jesus spoke each and every one of these sayings exactly as they are recorded. What matters is that these themes are resounded repeatedly and independently in our earliest surviving sources. Jesus appears to have anticipated that the coming judgment of God, to be brought by the Son of Man in a cosmic act of destruction and salvation, was imminent. It could happen at any time. But it would certainly happen within his own generation." (Pg. 161)
Like all of Ehrman's books, this one will be controversial. But it is an excellent popular summary of the case [see Jesus of Nazareth: Millenarian Prophet for a more "scholarly" treatment], and is well worth serious study---whether one agrees with him, or not.
